Adventures in Cache Valley!!

Darin and I are both from Cache Valley. God's country--for those who don't know!! The kids LOVE going there to visit Grandma and Grandpa Jones, Bonka Don, and their cousins. Here is Logan helping grandma Jones make bread. She is always so good to have a handful of grandchildren up on chairs, and on the countertop, "helping" her stir and mix and roll and bake in the kitchen. And the kids know they ALWAYS get "farm waffles" at grandmas house. She has a waffle iron with the shapes of a barn and farm animals.
I love watching my kids have outdoor adventures in Cache Valley--seeing them experience even a tiny taste of my own childhood. I love it--and it gives me heart-attacks!! Here Ellie is climbing the haystack in the same barn I spent years climbing in myself. And Logan is sitting on top of a wood shed at the neighbors home. Notice the trampoline right under the shed...you guessed it!!! The "locals" jump on and off the shed. Very much like many of the "healthy activities" I participated in as a child. But my poor, sheltered, city kids!! I wouldn't let Logan even think about jumping off that shed!!! Not onto a trampoline with no pads, no net--not on a trampoline as "unsafe" as the ones I grew up jumping off of balconies on to!! These brief adventures for my kids made up my entire childhood. I have mourned the fact that my children are not growing up like I did. I think maybe that's why I am so overboard on so many other areas and activities for my kids. Trying to make up for what they will never experience. My perfect childhood in the country!!
Yes, it snowed this week. But baby animals means Spring really is here!! My brother had two baby lambs in his garage that are having to be bottle fed. Or maybe they were goats?? Sheesh!! I don't know the difference anymore!! Anyways--the kids loved having a turn feeding them and watching them leap in to the air--it is so cute!! Like they are those goats in the top of the alps with "Heidi". Leap, leap, leap. We had many baby animals in our home over the years to be bottle fed--goat kids, sheep lambs, pig piglets, etc. Not to mention boxes full of baby chicks with heat lamps hanging over them. Here's a county-boy story for you...why are those two babies without a mama?? Well, while trying to give birth, the mamas inside came out!! She would die for sure--no way to save her. So my brother had to "put her down", then he performed a cesarian on the deseased mother, and saved the two babies!!
Bonka Don, my dad and the kids grandpa, helped them pet the baby chicks. This batch were getting big and past the darling fuzzy stage. My favorite part of this little outing was the great picture I got of my dads hands. My siblings, click on the image to get a closer look--yep, those are our Dad's hands--so many memories!!
The kids had a great time with their cousins. Just hangin' around, finding treasures like feathers, and LOVING the Israelsen's kitty cat!! Aleena was obviously NOT afraid of the baby sheep!! That picture is a contest winner for sure!! So sweet!!
The kids got to go for a pony ride, bare-back style. I had to laugh thinking that we usually spend $5 per kid to do this at local events in our area!! Some people are wealthy in the lifestyle they are able to lead. Rich in treasures of nature for their children and grandchildren. Lucky enough to have a little moment like this happen over and over in their every day lives!! How I wish my kids had to gather the eggs, or clean out a stall, or hoe a few dozen rows, or use a megaphone to get your neighbor friends to hear you, or spend lazy summer days in dirty rivers and streams....aaahhhhhh!!!! Thanks for the adventure Jill and Julia!!
Can't beat time in Cache Valley!! We'll be back soon to experience Baby Animal Day at the Jensen Historical Farm!! Can't wait!!

That sounds like such a fun place for kids. I'm with you, our kids just don't get the same childhood that we did. We know too much to let our kids do anything "unsafe" now.

More and More Memories for those kids. They will never lack in having something to remember of their childhood. Thanks again for coming to help with my crazy Super Saturday.

Your kids are not re-creating your childhood memories - they are making their own to pass on to their children! How fun that you have a farm in the family to visit. Those look like some amazing memory-making times:)

Oh, I wish we could have come with you! Such great experiences for kids. I can't believe you grew up that way!! So sad about the sheep (or was it a goat?) dying from labor- glad your brother knew what he had to do. The hogle zoo had one of our OB's come do a c-section on an orangutan a couple years ago- his story is hilarious!
