Yep, that's me. I am officially "Mother of the Year" I earned that honor earlier in the year after Logan walked around with a BROKEN BONE in his foot for several weeks. And now--I've earned the title once more!!
So, last fall--yes, a very long time ago--the kids had the little eye screening at school. I got a note home suggesting we have Logan's eyes checked. Well, I knew he'd had a really tough day that day, and assumed he was completely distracted during the test, and that his eyes are actually just fine!! We've never noticed any problems with him being able to see, read, etc. His teacher never mentioned anything all year---he could see the board, writing, etc.
But lately I have been figuring maybe I'd better get his eyes checked, before he goes to school and has another screening, and I get one of those notes home again. This time I could just tell the school that I happen to know that his eyes are just fine.
So, I make the appointment and really, REALLY consider cancelling it. His eyes are FINE!! So for the first time ever, I ask Logan if he can see well out of both his eyes. He tells me, "Well the right one is always blurry." Huh? He's never thought to mention it--and I've never thought to ask. I was still not quite sure I believed him--but I did not cancel the appointment.
So we begin our TWO HOUR eye appointment. Starts off with the really easy charts--the kind they use at school for those eye screenings. Logan can see NONE of the letters with his right eye!! Not even the HUGE ones. Switch to the left eye and he can read all of them, even the tiny ones. I am pretty sure my jaw dropped to the floor. The doctor must have noticed, because he said that's how all the moms react when this happens.
So....in the end, here's the diagnosis. Logan's right eye sees life as a blur and always has. We could have caught this when he was a toddler--but nobody ever told me to take my toddler to the eye doctor!! It's not like he was running into walls, and he was a genius academically at the age of two!! Didn't seem like he needed glasses!! He also has some astigmatisms. That eye can't even see better with glasses right now, because it has gone so long seeing blur, that it's now lazy. The goal is to get that eye to see 20/40 WITH glasses....but that will be a ways off.
His new glasses will arrive in a week or so. He will wear them all the time. I can only guess at how many times they will break and we will replace them. And...every day after school we have to patch his good eye to force him to use his blurry eye. For two hours a day---for months and months, maybe a year. Oh this is going to be so FUN!!!!
Could have done it all years ago--but I really wanted to be "Mother of the Year", so we waited until 2010 to take care of Logan's blurry eye sight!!!! Watch for pics in a week of the new glasses. Luckily he is totally excited to wear glasses!!
P.S. That night I asked Logan why he never told us he had one blurry eye. He seemed confused and asked, "Mom, don't you have one blurry eye?" Guess he thought that's how all peoples eyes are.

Katy started wearing glasses when she was 2 1/2. She also wore a patch for a long time. It was very hard to put my sweet little girl in glasses let alone an eye patch, but it worked out. I am sure Logan will look adorable in those glasses. Can't wait to see them.
Oh Miriam, you've got your work cut out for you! As luck would have it, Jarom went through the same thing in 2nd grade! We patched + did glasses + he has no problems now. Good luck!
LOL!!! Oh man I just read this. I too got a letter about McKenna a year ago and didn't think anything about it. lucky she won't need the eye patch, she just needs glasses.
McKenna said: " she just wanted to be like me."
Miriam, I'm same 'mom of the year', only Nathan was 14 before we figured out how bad everything was!!! Uff da! A whole new world opened up, for him, with his new glasses. (and we're on the 3rd and 4th pairs, in less than a year...aahhh!) I heard of a special opthamologist, in Pleasant Grove, that does normal eye stuff, but also specializes in eye exercises for those on the autism scale. I'm taking Nathan...and myself...there, in October, when I get back from China. He has success in better than 20/20!!! Wow! His name is Robin Price. love ya lots! Motherhood is not for the faint of heart. Keep up the courage!
