OK, seriously....how many injuries will this boy have before he reaches adulthood? So, yesterday after school he was at his friends house. He was running and fell...on THE GRASS. How bad can that be? He had a teeny-tiny little cut on the palm of his hand. AND.....a weird bump under the skin. A small, hard protruding bump under the skin just beyond that tiny cut. It was very painful to him if I touched it or if he tried to close his palm. It was quite strange.
I thought we'd better take him to the doctor just in case...get some input anyways. I called his regular pediatrician evening care. They said the wait was at least 90 minutes. So we headed to the local Urgent Care. Got in pretty quick. They took X-rays, but nothing showed up. The doc said something that small will likely not show up unless it was very dense like glass or metal. So plastic, sticks, etc wouldn't show up. Then he tells us that it is very difficult to find things like that under the skin when you go in to get it. What? It's RIGHT THERE!!! He said he had a 1/10 chance of getting it out for us, and we might prefer to go to the ER for better luck.
OK. ER it is. We wait in the waiting room for about 90 minutes. Then they call us back. But they are super busy and all the rooms are full. So they don't give us a room. They give us a gurney. A rolling bed. Right in the busy hallway where we are totally in the way. Myself, Logan and Ellie had to stay ON that gurney. FOR TWO HOURS!!!!! I'm sure you can just imagine....it was lovely. And FYI, Darin is out of town on an adventure with the brothers. It is getting late and the kids are starving...we left before dinner. And bored...I didn't come prepared for a 5 hour ordeal.
Finally a second doctor comes on duty. A room becomes available and we get it!! So the doc tells up, "Yep, there is definately something in there. But don't be surprised if I can't get it out. It is very difficult to find things under the skin like this, once we go in to find it." WHAT?? I do not get this? The second doctor that has told us that. We can't leave it there!!! It is sticking out and very painful to Logan. Do we just leave it in there?? Seriously!! Do not tell me you can't get it out!!!
I totally regret not just driving into Salt Lake to go to Primary's. It's finally time to do the procedure and they do nothing to block Logan's view, and are a bit irritated that he is screaming. I'd scream to. Those numbing shots right in the palm of the hand really HURT!!! At least he held still for them while he screamed. I was holding the pillow up on the side of his head to block hi view as much as I could. Once he stopped screaming and we did lots of deep breaths together, I asked the nurse if she would be OK with him, without me. Because anyone who knows me knows that I am about two seconds from throwing-up or passing out. At this point I was really not happy that Darin was hours away on vacation. These kinds of things are his job...not mine.
I made the mistake of looking once or twice and now will always have an image of the digging around in Logan's hand. Ugh!! So they can't find the "thing" during the digging. Then they find it--yep, there is is, they feel it. Then they loose it!! Not to be found again. Ultimately, they stitched his hand up and the "thing" is still in there somewhere. They sent us home with an antibiotic for infection, a wrapped up hand, and the number of a surgeon to call on Monday. Really??? REALLY??? After five and a half hours??? REALLY???
We grabbed Little Caesar's, since we were all starving. Ate on the way home, and got the kids right into bed after 11:00 PM. Guess we'll see what the surgeon has to say next week. Really?

oh. my. word!! That is so ridiculous! Last monthI went to Dr. Goulds in the evening, for Alyssa's sore throat. We waited over 3 hours before we got seen, tested and a prescription for strep. What a joke! I was starting to think the Urgent care was the way to go, but now I'm not so sure. How lame that the hospital treated you that way too, grrrrr....
Good luck finding out what it is?!
What an awful ordeal!! So sorry for you getting the run-a-round and waiting, waiting, waiting! Logan's such a little trooper! + I'm glad you managed to stay upright through it all ;)
What a nightmare.
