We have had our dog, Lucky, for a year now. It has turned out to be Darin's dog, for the most part. The kids have never become super comfortable with him. They like the idea of Lucky as a part of our family, but have never really shown initiative to connect with him. We have felt sorry for him for a year now, having to live in a small kennel. Our lot is just too small to have a dog pooing and digging in the yard. We are so used to animals in the country, like when we were kids. Darin had faithfully taken him out for a good walk every evening, or a hike up on the foothills. The kids would join in once in awhile.
So, Darin took me by surprise when he said he had decided we should not keep Lucky any longer. There were reservations, tears and emotions, pleading from the kids, etc. But in the end, we were all convinced it was the right thing to do.
We were not willing give him to just anyone. As fate would have it, Darin's brothers family had been planning to get a dog this spring. They are in a new house in the country. They have lost of space for Lucky. And...they have six kids who LOVE THIS DOG!!! They have loved him when they have come to our house this past year. So they were more than excited to be his new owners. This little Allie girl in the picture with Logan plays with the dog constantly and doesn't mind a bit when he jumps on her and she falls to the ground.
Lucky is temporarily in a make-shift kennel at their house. Until the ground dries up and they can set up a dog run for him. But even in this make-shift kennel, he has double the space he did in our kennel. The kids get right in the kennel to play with him.
So, we are no longer dog-owners. We are a little sad. Darin will miss his walks with the dog. But we are really happy about the attention and space he will have in his new home. And....as Logan pointed out...Lucky can keep his last name, since his cousins last name is also Jones!! We love you, Lucky Storm Jones!!

Tough one, but sounds like a good decision all around.
