Cache Valley Memory Lane

So that nostalgic walk I took with Darin in Cache Valley (see next post) got me to thinking about how the city of Logan looked when I was a kid. So I did some online searching and came up with some pretty fun snapshots in time! These should be entertaining for family members to check out.

The Cache Valley Mall, 1980. When I was little it was so, so far to go all the way to the mall way out on 1400 North. The mall was pretty tiny, compared to most malls. I liked going to ZCMI with my mom, because she always stopped at the candy counter!

Dee's Hamburgers. Does anyone remember this? Way before it was Hardees, and then Burger King. I remember getting hamburgers here! Wasn't there a big clown mascot?
Dee's Drive In Restaurant

I found this Dee's clown online. I know there was one like this at the Logan store, but it's not in the photo.

I wrote about the Logan Library in my other post. Here's how it looked when I was a kid. I love the awning over the door!
Logan Library Building

Downtown Logan City. I totally shopped at Roskelleys with my mom and sisters several times....usually when someone needed a dress for something. I also remember mom buying us shoes at Randall's Shoes, which was somewhere near Roskelleys. Both stores are long gone. But the Bluebird is still right there today.
Logan Main Street

The old Logan hospital. Where was this anyways? I so vaguely remember it being by the temple? Or maybe just my doctors office was across the street from the temple? (Some older sibling help me out here.) Wherever it was, I had my adenoids removed and tubes put in my ears in this hospital. I still remember the hospital playroom had a big wagon. And I remember they put me in a gigantic crib. I was four years old and could not believe they put me in a crib! They tore the place down a couple of years later. I read online that it used to be called Logan LDS hospital, before we lived in Cache Valley.

The Logan Airport. My dad used to fly to lots of places to do science workshops for elementary schools and other university science stuff. Back then he would catch a small plane from here to Salt Lake. We'd go with mom to drop him off at the airport, and hang around til the small plane took off. Then we knew by the time we drove home, he was already almost to Salt Lake. I don't remember how old I was when they stopped using this airport for public flights like that.
Logan's air terminal stands empty in August 1967. (Deseret News Archives)

The Logan Roller Rink. I wrote about this in my other post. Here's a picture of how it looked in the 1980's. Just slightly less run down than it is now!
Logan Roller Rink

Federal Avenue. This is the street that the frozen food storage locker was on. We also parked here many times to go into Bernina fabric  store with mom. (Front building on the right.)
Federal Avenue

The Logan train depot. Located at the west end of Center Street. It's now a restaurant, Cafe Sabor, where Darin and I ate out one night this past weekend. We sat in the outside section, which was right next to the far left front white post. It was a fun building to drive past as a kid, and it's still very much in it's original layout inside.
Oregon Shortline Railroad Depot

Merlin Olsen Central Park. That's not me in this picture, but it might as well be. We played here so many times when we were kids.Wading in the water near the bridges. And they had that sooo tall metal slide, the kind that stood alone, and was burning hot in the summer. Tallest slide we knew of when we were kids. And they had those 'around the world swings'. What are those called? Like a huge Maypole that you hold on to, run, and then your feet swing out off the ground. (OK I think my next post from the past will be all the retro playground equipment I remember.)

Hyrum Dam. Oh yeah....we played on this beach many a time! Usually with the Weaver family and their boat.

What is this place anyways? The feed place? We'd pull up here and get bags of some kind of feed for some kind of animal. And this may or may not be the same place I climbed to the top of in the middle of the night when I was old enough to know not to. (Since there were No Trespassing signs.)
Silo

I never thought twice about this old barn. It was just there. I never thought to ask my mom what "womens tonic"was. Turns out its one of the most photographed barns ever.

The Utah Theater. Watched a LOT of movies here over a couple of decades. Goonies, Back to the Future, Karate Kid, E.T. 1980's classics!! We liked to sit in the balcony.

The "toaster"church. I guess because it looks like a toaster. This was the church on the USU campus where all the weekly institute dances were held. I went to a bunch of those dances. Mostly while I was sixteen and in high school.

And Needham Jewelers. Middle of the block, at the sign of the clock. I can remember Needham's on Main Street when I was really little. Our wedding rings both came from here.

I am just loving finding all these old photos. Hoping to find more. Hope those of you who were there too, enjoyed these awesome pics!!
